SUMMER CULTURAL
MUSIC & MOVEMENT INTENSIVE.
BEGINS JUNE 14.
Join the Bonifacio Valera, Jr. Foundation's Rhythm & Roots program — an intensive summer cultural music and movement workshop for children ages 7–12, held every Sunday from 10:00am–12:30pm, June 14 through August 9, 2026 at Dance Mission Theater.
We are kuya Bon - a cultural children's drum line
In Rhythm & Roots, we don't just play music. We drum, we sing, we move, we learn — and we do it all rooted in Filipino culture.
We introduce children to their Filipino heritage through songs, language, and movement that have been passed down for generations — then we make it groove. Folk tunes get fresh beats woven in, and Tagalog words come alive through rhythm, repetition, and games. And the music doesn't stop at the drums — children move to what they create, weaving traditional Filipino folk steps together with modern grooves.
Every Sunday, your child will:
-
Drum — build real rhythm skills and proper technique
-
Sing — Filipino folk songs that connect them to their roots
-
Study — basic music theory, the language behind the music
-
Speak — basic Tagalog, learned through song and practice
-
Move — dance using traditional folk and modern dance steps
-
Find their calm — introducing children's yoga, helps builds focus and calm
Our cultural music program is intensive — and that's intentional.
Rhythm & Roots is not a drop-in class. Each week, children take home a cultural practice packet — rhythms to practice, songs to review, words to learn, etc... Assignments are given each week to be submitted by week's end so we can review each child's progress and prepare personalized feedback before the next workshop date.
The work they do during the week is what makes every Sunday workshop magical.
This is a commitment — and the results will show it.
We have 10 spots — and we're saving them for kids who are all in.
We keep this drumline small on purpose. Every child gets real attention, real feedback, and real growth. We're looking for kids who are curious, eager, and ready to show up — week after week. All we ask is commitment, dedication, and a willingness to put in the work between sessions so they're ready to bring their best every Sunday. The more they give, the more they grow.
It all leads to one moment:
PERFORMANCE READY. We will be applying in June to participate in the Pistahan Parade in San Francisco. Whether we hit that parade route or perform on a different stage for family and friends — every child in this drumline will perform at the end of the workshop. Loud. Together. Proud.
